The Village of Hoffman Estates retained Hey and Associates, Inc. to design replacements and extensions to three culverts under Hassell Road for the Poplar Creek East Branch. As part of the Hassell Road reconstruction project, two CMP arch culverts in poor condition are to be replaced and extended with reinforced concrete box culverts. The third culvert, a concrete box in satisfactory condition, is being extended with the top slab being replaced to extend the culvert’s lifespan. This project was used part of the Village’s MFT funds.
Data collection completed by Hey including topographic survey, soil borings and utility information was conducted to assist in the design of the proposed culverts. Hydraulic modeling of the existing and proposed culverts was completed for design and permitting, and a floodway construction permit was obtained through IDOT Local Roads. Additional permitting through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Illinois Department of Natural Resources / US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District was completed. Design plans and specifications for the culverts were prepared by Hey for inclusion in the overall Hassel Road Reconstruction Project bid package that was compiled by the Village.
