George Lake Rehabilitation District
Lake Water Quality Improvements Project
Hey and Associates, Inc. (Hey) was contracted by the Lake George Rehabilitation District to evaluate ongoing water quality issues within the approximately 70-acre lake. Hey reviewed and analyzed existing lake data and performed a detailed review of inputs from the approximately three square mile watershed to the lake. The watershed is approximately 45% agricultural, and water quality sampling showed elevated phosphorous and nitrogen levels entering the lake through three inlets.
Hey prepared a report, documenting our assessment of the watershed and lake. Five projects were identified to potentially enhance lake water quality. The projects include enhancement of an existing low quality wetland area to treat agricultural runoff, filter strips and vegetated swales within existing agricultural fields, restoration of an eroding inlet channel, and dredging of a second degraded inlet channel.
Hey is currently preparing permit submittal documents for the inlet channel dredging. We are also assisting the District with preparation of lake management grant submittals to Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to assist in funding the remaining projects.
