Lincoln Creek - Reach 6 Project
Winner of the
2002 BEST REHABILITATION / RENOVATION / RESTORATION
NATIONAL DESIGN-BUILD AWARD from the
Design Build Institute of America
Hey and Associates assisted the Design/Build team for the Milwaukee Metropolitan
Sewerage District in this flood control and environmental restoration work along
the full 8-mile length of Lincoln Creek. The modifications to Reach 6 consisted
of removing the concrete channel lining from the 1.3-mile long reach and
replacement with stone lined pools and riffles. The channel bottom was lined
with fieldstone and the banks formed by 5-foot high quarry stone blocks to
maintain the hydraulic capacity. The creek bottom above the low flow level was
vegetated with native species. On the upper turf banks flowering native prairie
plants were installed as accent plantings.
Hey and
Associates’ role included conducting the hydraulic analyses for the preliminary
and final design, assisting in the development of the design cross section,
designing and specifying seeding and planting, and writing significant portions
of the draft Design Report and the draft Monitoring and Maintenance report.
